Secrets

A secret’s a secret
If you keep it in store
But if you let it out
It’s a secret no more

wordle: pond, school, explained, skim

Ponder

The pond beckoned
explained the student
who escaped from school
to skip stones and watch
them as they bounced
and skimmed across
the water’s surface.
Ponds do that,
especially to country kids.

Object in the back closet

Shoes

What can I do with
fifty pair of shoes?
Shoe a large centipede?
Maybe they’d make good planters?
Or I could border my flower garden
with them, instead of rocks.
Or stuff them between the walls
as insulation.
Maybe I could put them on display
in a china cabinet
to bring back the memories.
I could make unique centerpieces,
collages or candleholders.
If my Christmas tree was larger
I could use them as ornaments.
Perhaps bookends for all of my books?
Picture frames?
What do I do with fifty pair of shoes
when I only wear a few?
Maybe it’s time to head for Good Will.

Form Poem

I wait
Anticipate
Your answers
I know I can depend on You
Time may pass
They’ll come at last
Not because I’m great
But because You’re promises are true.

Wednesday Poetic Asides--Until We Meet Again

Sisters

We used to see each other day.
We had a specific order around the table—
Judy, Linda, Kathy, Karen, me.
We fought, laughed, played, grew together.
So many experiences:
The Sunflower Club, Girl Scouts
Hikes all over the neighborhood
Skating, Hide and Seek, Sardines
Reading #5 and playing Scrabble
Vacations in Delaware
and the Up at the Bus
Good times at Shannon Creek Park
Mowing, gardening, more mowing
Croquet and badminton with cousins and boyfriends
Every Christmas Eve at Pappap’s
Now, we have phone calls, blogs,
and Facebook till we meet again.
We’re not a daily part of each other’s lives,
but yet, we are.

PB Life's a Little Weird

My Life’s a Little Different

I dry my hair.
He jumps up and down beside me.
I burn my finger.
She laughs.
I vacuum the floor.
He hugs the vacuum cleaner.
We have fun chatting,
even though she can’t talk.
I delight in his music
as he plays the vacuum cleaner hose.
I’m busy writing a novel
and she wants me to arrange
dozens of items on her lap in order.
I shop as I push her in her wheelchair
and he follows behind the cart.
I have to be careful where I put my teabags
so he doesn’t eat them.
I brush my teeth
and I brush theirs.
I do my exercises.
He wants to dance.
I wake up in the morning saying hello
as she says hello back.
I relax in the living room
and in he walks
with his pants around his ankles.
The calendar says October
and she’s ready for Christmas.
I pray in the morning
and he drools on my head.
Life’s a little weird sometimes.

October 22, 2011 Saturday wordle: flash, enrich, clout, off-center

Off Center
In a flash
A blinding light
A lightning strike
The idea came to me
The dream
The vision
The inspiration
To enrich my life
My world
My journey
But I didn’t have enough clout
Power
Influence
To pull it off
Maneuver
Manipulate
Accomplish
So it threw me off-center.
Off kilter
For a loop.

A shadorma--Something in my yard

Ceramic
Pink toothpick holder
Lay buried
In my yard
Many years when I found it
I wish it could speak

Clarihew

The puppeteer Kevin Clash
With Elmo makes a big splash
If everyone is backing him,
Why do I feel like smacking him?

PA prompt: Spooky

Spooky
A cobbled street in the fog
Spiders, snakes, a three-headed dog
A hoot of an owl, a squeak of a mouse
Creaky stairs in a haunted house

Ogres, goblins, ghosts and bats
Glowing eyes of witches’ cats
Vampires, zombies, devils, demons
Wandering spirits, frightened screamin’

Skeletons dancing in the moonlight
Rattling chains in the deep of night
Specter in a mirror, a gnarly tree
Fanged creatures, a whispered plea

An empty coffin, eyes with no pupils
Beasts and aliens with no scruples
Quickening footsteps on a shady path
Beauty contestants on teaching math

Object in Livng Room

Entertaining Angels

An antique Christmas ornament
sits on my entertainment center—
an angel in a transparent case.
She has blond hair, dainty features,
long eyelashes, red dress,
and golden wings.
I can imagine a real angel
(older than creation,
able to roll away a boulder,
supernaturally open iron gates,
clothe the mouths of hungry lions,
intimidate to the point
of turning grown men’s
limbs to goo)
 standing there
looking at this bit of plastic
and having a good chuckle.

wordle: heartbroken, life, divided, petals

Heartbroken at the
life taken so needlessly,
divided between justice and forgiveness
tears fell softly like rose petals.

Kitchen object

At a Second Glance

They say who I love and who loves me
They express the way I see things
They’re proof of where I’ve been
They help remind me of important dates
And why I do the things I do
Refrigerator magnets

Form Poem Kyrielle

To Search for You

Confusion grew from year to year
My path in life became unclear
For what I wanted, had no clue
And so I vowed to search for You

And though I went to church each week
And yes to You I’d often speak
The differences it made were few
And so I vowed to search for You

I traveled far from east to west
And true, I tried to do my best
To read Your Word the whole way through
And so I vowed to search for You

And I was careful to apply
Your Holy Word, at least to try
And slowly You made all things new
Because I vowed to search for You

But greater than the things I see
To know and feel Your love for me
I learned Your Spirit led me to,
Make my vow to search for You

PA prompt disguised

Disguised

His crude manner
keeps people at a distance.
They shake their heads
at his unkempt hair and beard,
his worn tennis shoes,
holey jeans and tee.
He has no sense of decorum
and on occasion offends,
especially the perfectionists.
Yet he gives selflessly,
works hard helping others
and is particularly tender
to those most vulnerable.
He’s a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

Grandparents or Grandchildren

A Grandma’s Heart
Like a woman
with an empty womb
Longing to hear
the pitter patter of feet
A little piping voice
A small warm body
to curl up on her lap
For now the cat
will have to do

Cowboy or Cowgirl

My Little Sister

Red cowboy hat
Perched on short blond hair
Green eyes, wan smile
Black vest, silver guns
On Horsey Sam’s saddle
Galloping, galloping, galloping
Over imaginary terrain
Riding off into the sunset
Of my memory

Poetic Bloomings Falling Short

Expression

The fervent pastor paces as he preaches
Back and forth faster as he teaches
Repeating himself to get the point across
Worshipful hearts give birth to praise
Thoughts are good starts but it’s time to raise
Your hands and voices and give thanks for the cross

October 6, 2011 Shadorma

Autumn leaves
Aging and changing
And Dying
Reminding us
Our own short times in the sun
And coming slumber.

October 5, 2011 Poetic Asides Fall Poem

Autumn Psalm

Thank You for afternoon sunshine,
clear blue skies and  gentle wind.
For walks in the park with friends,
fresh air and final dose of yard care.
Thank You for refreshing rain,
rows of pumpkins and trees dressed
in golds, oranges, reds, purples
as if in celebration and thanksgiving
for past long sunny, summer days,
present crisp ones and the coming
cold slumber and bustle of winter.

October 4, 2011 Busy

Bustling about
Under deadlines
Stressed at times
Yet glad to be busy

Oct 3, 2011 Something surprising in something ordinary

Let Us Take a Closer Look

White like bone
Pale yellow like real butter
Yellow green like a praying mantis
Pale green like mint candy
Green yellow like corn husks
Green like grass
Green like an evergreen
And a little rust
It’s surprising how many colors
are in a head of lettuce.

Poetic Blooms wordle: wander, headlines, energy, music, lonely, joke

Poetic Reports
My eyes wander over the headlines
of the local paper looking for words
which capture the energy, the music,
the loneliness, the joke of life.
None do. Wouldn’t it be nice
if poets reported the news?

Wordle: Statue, muscles, story, move

One Statue’s Story

Her blank eyes blinked,
her facial muscles twitched,
and she smiled for the first time
in one hundred twenty-five years.
What a relief to rest her right arm
and set down the heavy stone tablets.
She rustled her long flowing robes
to make her move off the pedestal.
She shook her hair free from the bun,
and skipped off to Madison Avenue,
where she could replace the seven spikes
with something more fashionable.

Baker's Dozen School Days

Just Wondering

What would my school days
have been like
 If I had forgotten
my locker combination
 as many times
as I have dreamed about it
in the next thirty-five years?
