Alaska 26 Poetic Bloom prompt dorsimbra

Trip

Alaska lies ahead of me today.
Excitement fills my heart, I plan and pack.
I pray all will go smoothly and His way.
It will seem like no time until I’m back.

ziplines, hikes, dances
bikes, canoes, jeeps,
wildlife, scenery, malamutes
friends, grins, love

I’m grateful for this opportunity.
At times, I’m tempted to decline such joy,
remembering past pains and others’, but
Alaska lies ahead of me today.

Courage

A lily liver
My lip a quiver
No show?
With hope a sliver
My spine a-shiver
I know
the real Joy Giver
is like a river
I’ll go

Trip Coordinator

People pay big bucks for wedding coordinators
to insure the multitude of things that could go wrong
don’t.

I’m trusting You to be my vacation coordinator
so the multitude of things that could go wrong
don’t.

I trust and acknowledge You (not me) wholeheartedly,
so you will keep my paths straight. And worry I
won’t.

August 26, 2013

Five more days till my trip.
Sixteen to the anniversary
of September eleventh 2001.
And thanks to that day I have nervous
thoughts flitting through my mind
like a bunch of stressed-out butterflies.
What to pack, what not to pack
not for my comfort and enjoyment
but for what won’t set off buzzers,
hold up the security line,
or incite any embarrassing inspections.
But  I look forward to my vacation
with joy and peace,
At least, I’ll try with God’s help.

Poetic Bloomings -- Baffled

What Could it Be?

My sisters and I, home alone,
The youngest—two, one almost grown.
From dark of night, we couldn’t see.
Kerthunk, kerthunk, what could it be?

The eldest sis scared us the most.
“Perhaps a mischievous ghost!”
A spooky sound, like a heartbeat.
Kerthunk, kerthunk, what could it be?

At seven I didn’t believe.
“There’s no such thing!” I stamped my feet.
“So you go out,” said older three.
Kerthunk, kerthunk, what could it be?

And so I bravely went out there—
A beagle in a rocking chair!
I laughed at them. “What did I see?
Kerthunk, kerthunk, what could it be!”

My sisters and I, home alone
Kerthunk, kerthunk, what could it be?

God’s Submarines

Four orcas park side by side
dorsal fins and flukes up
Get their fill of fresh air
and gawking tourists
Submerge

The Dall Sheep Ram

The ram stands
with curly horns,
looking forlorn
and a little wise
with squinty eyes.
His nose, heart-shaped.
His mouth half smiling and moving
like an old man chewing tobacco.
I feel as curious as it looks,
with his tiny ears perked up.
What’s it like climbing
the tallest peaks
carrying all that load on its head?
Does it every want to turn upside down
with its small cloven hooves up instead?

An Orca
How much thrust does it take
to get that much weight
to breach the ocean’s surface?
Does it catch a glimpse
of Alaska’s purplish mountains
before landing with a splash
and disappearing to the depths?

Alaska 19

The Atlas

Red vein-like highways
Yellow splotches of cities
Green blotches of national
parks marked with tents
Blue almost-straight interstates
Light blue blots of lakes
and snakes of rivers
On the end table teasing
and tempting me
Open to pages 14 & 15

The Malamute

Says Malamute a fine woo woo to me and you, waves plumed tail.
Likes work and play, pulls sleds all day, likes us to stay, he’ll treat us well.
A wolf-like face, with strength and grace, will keep the pace and eat a lot.
He’ll dig a hole, he likes it cold, he’s big and bold, just watch the pot.

Contentment

A silent soul sat atop a hill
underneath a silky blue sky
soaking in serenity and grandeur.
White wispy clouds wandered
over fields of yellow clover.

Alaska 15

Like an Ant

Piney shore sheltering bay
Magnificent mountains
stand watch over all
Clouds hover

Little yellow rubber raft
drifting along with whales
and God knows what else
underneath

Alaska 14

Somewhere

A rainbow
Not Kansas but Alaska
Not the yellow brick road
But long golden grasses in the morning sun

Not Dorothy
But an ambling Grizzly bear
Not a fantasy land
On second thought…

The Invitation

Two lovers meet
atop a knoll.
A mystical land of glaciers
spreads out before them
in whites, grays and silver blues,
like their future
stretching toward the unknown,
daring them to add color
to a monochromatic world.

Sea Sounds

Listen to gulls on Alaskan coast
Ship’s brass bell clanging out time
The bubbling, splashing waves-a-thrashing
The light clattering of sea shell chimes

The haunting song of a humpback whale
Otter pup squeals and sea lion groans
Waves-a-thrashing, the bubbling, splashing
Morbid sailors’ tales of Davy Jones

Alaska 10 (1b)

An Alaskan Sunrise

Sun peeks over frozen lake blushed pink
Tree shapes like skaters’ parents round rink
Piper plane in sky—giant dragonfly
Stirs chuckles of American mink

Alaska 7

War

Two grizzlies fight
in flowered fields,
their strength emulating
fortressed mountains.

Two warriors
demanding what’s theirs
echoed everywhere
in creatures big and small.

Alaska 6

Reflections

Robin-egg sky
Puffs of white clouds
Rolling bright green hills
Ragged edged black mountains
so beautiful God make lake mirrors
so we can see them twice.

Moonrise

The moon
bathed in murky blue
rested on frosted
tips of pines,
lending light
to a wooded haven
keeping Alaskan secrets.

Alaska 3

Eternally Extravagant

The humped-back grizzly
wades out into a stream
to catch its breakfast with only bluish
snow-capped mountains watching.
God pours out his extravagance
in His creation
and, through Jesus,
His love.

Poetic Bloomings Adaption

Tending Roots

Wanderlust
thrives on starting over again—
frequent moves,
new friends, goals and plans,
adventure.

The difficulty
lies in staying put,
plodding, plugging away—
same people, places,
to-do lists.

Creativity breeds newness
like colorful bark
on a rainbow eucalyptus tree—
always changing, always beautiful,
always rooted.

Alaska 2

In a Cabin

Lone star in inky sky
Tiny cabin, thick snowy roof
Square yellow lights—
window and on white ground
Tall thin pine silhouettes
Distant edge of white rugged mountain
Two smoke-like wisps of Aurora Borealis
Souls kept in comfort and fear
from grand beauty and adventure.

Alaskan poems 1

An Alaskan Sunrise

The Alaskan sun peeked
over the edge of the frozen lake,
casting a pink on blue glow.

Scraggly tree silhouettes
stood around
like parents of ice skaters.

A piper plane sat nose tilted up,
a disoriented dragonfly
wondering where warmth went.

Poetic Asides Mistakes

Mistakes

M istakes are like mosquitoes
I nfamous blood suckers
S ucking the life right out of you
T aking time and money
A nd even people but
K eeping mistake-free is impossible
E veryone makes all kinds of blunders
