PAD #5 vegetables

Corn on the Cob

When I stood in a cafeteria line
and saw their idea of a serving
of corn on the cob,
about three inches long,
I had to laugh.

When Mom cooked for the seven of us,
she made corn on the cob in a canner.
My sisters and I would challenge each other
to see how many pieces of corn we could eat
—six, seven, eight….with lots of melted butter.

One time, my next sister up pretended
she was a typewriter working her way
across the corn with a ding at the end.
It’s funny how little things
bring back the fondest memories.
