PA music hymns

Hymns

The church I go to blasts the simple choruses
on drums, guitars, and piano amplified to the nth.
I grew my hair past my ears to cover my earplugs.
The worship team leader knows few hymns.
So at home for exercise I walk up and down the hall
with an old hymn book singing all the songs I know,
savoring the words that enrich my faith in the triune God.

Disposition

It’s hard to find the funny
When I am overwhelmed
I work hard for my money
It’s hard to find the funny
With days cloudy to sunny
By to-dos I am compelled
It’s hard to find the funny
When I am overwhelmed

Lazy Bum

Sometimes I’d like to stay in bed.
And let the whole world do its thing
Pull the covers over head
Sometimes I’d like to stay in bed.
Not go to work, but sleep instead
To my dreams, I will cling
Sometimes I’d like to stay in bed.
And let the whole world do its thing

Brain Fog

Sometimes my mind’s a blank
Can’t remember where I’ve been
Or where I’m going, to be frank.
Sometimes my mind’s a blank.
Feel like subject of a prank
Nothingness seems a sin
Sometimes my mind’s a blank
Can’t remember where I’ve been

Rondine

Impossible?

Impossible? But not for God.
At times, we feel we’re in a hopeless mess.
We try so hard, but we digress.
The way to destruction is so broad.
Created by Him, but oh so flawed.
Sinking under the quicksand of stress.
 Impossible?

He guides us with his staff and rod.
He forgives those who confess.
He loves us so and likes to bless.
The God of Heaven, we applaud.
Possible.

In Hawaii

In Hawaii—I’m looking forward to that day—
The sun shines warm. The sand glistens white.
The water is clear. The breeze is light.
The dancers dance as ukuleles play.
Their arms curve, their hips sway.
Watching them will be a delight
 In Hawaii.

We’ll run about in the ocean spray.
Having fun like nymph and sprite.
Refreshed and relaxed. Smiles bright.
Forget about work, it’s time to play
In Hawaii.

John 3:16

John 3:16 means everything to me.
The creator of the universe
Loved us for better and for worse
And sent His beloved Son to redeem
All humankind for eternity
To free everyone from the devil’s curse.
John 3:16.

Those who ask for forgiveness will receive.
Though our bodies will ride in the back of a hearse.
Across the chasm we'll  traverse.
The promise is for those who believe,
John 3:16.

O, Holy God, I Look to You

O, Holy God, I look to You.
Your love, Your mercy, strength and grace.
Please, change my heart to seek Your face.
Priorities are all askew.

The world shows false, Your love proves true.
I find You in that secret place.
O, Holy God, I look to You.
Your love, Your mercy, strength and grace.

At times I don’t know what to do.
The time goes by at a fast pace.
With you alone I’ll win this race.
I know that You will see me through.
O, Holy God, I look to You.

Rondeau

You Are the Stream

You are the stream, I am the tree
So I need You to nth degree
My roots stretch out in search of You
Your life-filled water, I pursue
I reach for You most greedily

When pestilence tormented me
I took You in persistently
I didn’t fall when north winds blew
You are the stream.

My branches grow so happily
My luscious leaves glint merrily
Yes, from Your riches this tree grew
To drink Your strength, what I must do
Without You I have no esprit
You are the stream.

Treadmill

All my struggles
for self-improvement
are like running
on a treadmill,
getting nowhere
but hoping
the exercise itself
will do some good.

Hike

Colorado blue sky
Dazzling sun on deep snow
Three friends trudge through the woods
Stumbling in covered footprints
Chatting and laughing together

The meadow stretched out high
Mountain views from this plateau
Displaying Colorado goods
Catching shimmers and glints
Moods as light as a feather

No need for hats or hoods
No reason to moan or wince
But delight in spring-like weather

You Are My Rock

You are my rock in stormy seas
You are my song in troubled times
You are my garden of comfort
You are my light in dead of night

You are my rope of sanity
You are my rock in stormy seas
You are my tree of life and hope
You are my path to mark my way

You are my river flowing free
You are my fresh air when life’s stale
You are my rock in stormy seas
You are my branch saving my life

You are blue skies lifting my heart
You are water in my desert
You are my mountain of mercy
You are my rock in stormy seas

Write On

Finding time to write
Could be dead of night
Or dawn
Words that may excite
And nibble or bite
Press on
We struggle and fight
Until morning light
Time gone

This is a Temporary Life

With all our joys surrounding us
Like friends, and children, husband, wife
Too many blessings to discus
This is a temporary life.

With all our troubles and the fuss
With pain that pierces like a knife
And evil oozing like vile puss
This is a temporary life.

With Jesus being our big plus
And help and hope in daily strife
Our worries seem superfluous
This is a temporary life.

Dizain

As Day Dawns

A quiet morning, I should be at peace.
Something threatens like termites in the walls.
The flow of to-dos never seem to cease.
Today’s tasks bounce around like super balls.
Contemplation whispers, but duty calls.
I rein in this onslaught so I can pray,
And commit my concerns to God today.
I ask Him to be sure that His will is done,
That His Holy Spirit would fill and sway,
And that I’d take joy in His precious Son.

Bref double

Born Again

Her genes wore well
Unknown to her
Her thoughts a pit
She was trapped in

Depression jail
Her life a blur
Without focus
She couldn’t win

She stumbled through
Years in struggle
Felt all alone
Amongst the din

God cracked the shell
New life did stir

Poetic Asides As blank as blank

As Old as My Mother

I’m almost sixty.
I don’t know why
I thought I’d never
get as old as my mother.

Now, I find myself
walking around in her body,
complaining about aches and pains
and staring at my wrinkly hands.

I think her thoughts,
marveling at how quickly
the weeks go around, wondering
when my name will be called.

I don’t worry as much as she did.
I’m an amateur. She was a professional.
As a teen, I’d be in bed and through thin walls
eavesdrop on Dad and Mom worrying

about who I was out with,
what we were doing together.
I’d never tell them there was
more to worry about than they thought of.

But with all the things
my kids told me
after they were grown,
yes, I’m as old as my mother.

Sedoka 577 question 577 answer

Jesus, here I am,
sending my love and questions.
Do you love me more than these?

I love you the best.
Just like I love every one.
I’m big enough to do this.

when in doubt

Good Answer

Dove who coos to me,
so persistent in your call,
is your message important?

I’m just a plain dove.
Creator made me this way
to be loved just as I am.

Good God

You are good,
nothing but good.
Even when you allow
bad things to happen,
it’s for the ultimate good.
The dark colors in a painting
make the bright spots stand out.

PA Good Blank

Good Evening

After a busy day, I rest in my green recliner, with a hot cup of tea with cream and sugar.
Thirty games of Words with Friends wait for me, and I play them one by one.
I shut out the rest of the world as I search for the word that yields the most points.

Silent, unseen friends
Understand the way I feel
They help me unwind

Poetic Asides Ekphrastic painting

Lineage

When my parents died
and we five girls
divvied up their belongings,
I became a proud owner
of a WWI uniform,
stuffed in a leather bag,
smelling like death.

The helmet, gas mask,
pants and shirt, brown,
and, oh, so small,
must have shrunk
over the century
because my grandfather
wasn’t that petite.

Or was he,
at twenty-something?
I also inherited
my dad’s WWII hat,
my oldest sister, his purple heart
for a head wound.
It’s a wonder we’re here at all.

It Can’t Be

“It can’t be!”  Hubby exclaimed
at the piles of white
when we got into Florida
late one night.

What the Wyoming boy
didn’t understand
was what he thought was snow
was only sand.

Poetic Asides refresh

Socking it to Winter

This may seem odd, but
when winter sets in forever
with black bare branches
against the dismal gray sky
and white snow all around
like a blank piece of paper,

I buy a big bag of bright socks.
So when starkness of winter
gets to me I gaze at and admire
my lime green, passionate purple,
hot pink, or flaming orange socks,
feeling cheered and refreshed.
It brings spring in my step.

Let’s blow this popsicle stand
and move to the Caribbean,
and bask in sunshine along clear waters,
drink lemonade, sing silly songs,
and dance like no one’s looking.
